The mound is not the colony

What you see — the mound — is the colony's front porch. The queen and most of the colony live in tunnels spreading 10+ feet out and several feet down. Kick the mound or spray the top and the colony does what fire ants do best: it moves. Often into your walls, under the slab, or to the other side of the yard. Effective fire ant control kills the queen, not the mound.

How we treat

Baits first. Slow-acting baits that foragers carry down to the queen — the colony dies from the inside over 2–6 weeks. Mound treatment for mounds near high-traffic areas (by the door, where kids play) for faster knockdown. Broadcast treatment for whole-yard control when mounds are everywhere. The right mix depends on how bad it is and where the mounds are.

Why fire ants matter beyond the sting

The stings are the obvious problem — painful, and dangerous for anyone allergic. But fire ants also damage: they chew irrigation lines and electrical wiring (they're attracted to electrical fields), invade AC units, and farm aphids on your plants. A yard full of mounds isn't just uncomfortable; it's destructive.

Keeping them out

Fire ants re-invade from neighboring properties — your treated yard is an island in a sea of ants. That's why broadcast treatments are usually seasonal, not one-time: spring and fall applications keep the island defended. We'll set the schedule based on your yard and the surrounding pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does fire ant treatment work?

Baits take 2–6 weeks for full colony elimination — the foragers have to carry enough bait to the queen. Mound drenches work faster on that specific mound but don't protect the rest of the yard.

Is fire ant treatment safe for my kids and dog?

We use products labeled for residential yards and apply them per the label — which is written around exactly this question. We'll tell you when the yard is ready for play after treatment.

Why do mounds keep appearing after treatment?

New queens fly in and start new colonies, especially after rain — and neighboring untreated yards are a constant source. That's why fire ant control is usually a seasonal program, not a single visit.
