When DIY is fine
A single ant scout on the counter? A spider in the corner? A wasp that flew in through an open door? DIY handles the one-offs: catch it, seal the entry, move on. Basic prevention is also DIY-friendly — caulk gaps, fix screens, store food sealed, take trash out, trim branches off the roof. Most of pest control is really home maintenance.
When DIY backfires
German roaches: over-the-counter sprays are repellent — they scatter roaches deeper into walls and make professional baits less effective later. Bed bugs: bug bombs push them into wall voids and neighboring rooms; they don't kill the eggs. Termites: spraying the mud tubes you can see does nothing to the colony underground. Fire ants: disturbing a mound without killing the queen just relocates it — sometimes into your walls.
The hidden cost of the spray can
DIY fails slowly. A $12 can every few weeks for a year is $150+ and a still-growing problem. Worse, months of wrong treatment let infestations build: a German roach problem caught early takes weeks to solve; one sprayed wrong for six months takes months. The cheapest treatment is the right treatment, done early.
What a pro actually brings
It's not a stronger spray — it's identification, placement, and patience. Knowing it's Argentine ants (not ghost ants) changes the bait. Knowing the nest is behind the dishwasher changes where treatment goes. And knowing German roaches need multiple visits across the egg cycle changes the plan from "spray once" to "program." You're paying for the diagnosis more than the chemical.
The middle path
Use DIY for prevention and one-offs. Call a pro for: anything that keeps coming back, anything in the walls or structure (termites, carpenter ants), anything that bites at night (bed bugs, fleas), and anything dangerous (wasp nests, especially large ones). When in doubt, send a photo — we'll tell you honestly whether it's a DIY fix or not.
